The town of Sylva has an interesting history. According to local legend, the town was named after William Sylva, a Danish (or possibly Spanish) handyman who visited the area and stayed with General E. R. Hampton, a man who owned most of the land that would be developed into downtown Sylva. When he needed a name for the growing town, the general asked his daughter what she thought the name would be. The young girl liked the visiting handyman so much that she requested to name the town after him, resulting in the name "Sylva." Recent studies have doubted the story's authenticity, but it relates a sense of small-town charm that is still true of Sylva today.
