Life in Marion, North Carolina

Is geography germane? Does history have significance? Is it at all important where a family lives, raises children, and dies? Marion, North Carolina is a wonderful place to do the most important things that ever get done – being born, working hard, loving sincerely, living enthusiastically, worshiping regularly, and dying without regrets. I have already begun to set my heart on returning to my own roots in Marion, North Carolina. Perhaps after a few more minutes of reading, you will consider joining me there!

You see, Marion is consistently selected as a top ten North Carolina small city. It has also been honored as a top North Carolina town for retirement. What does it offer that wins it these accolades? Why has the population almost doubled since the year 2000? People are seeing value in Marion, NC that we need to see as well. Let’s take a look.

Marion, North Carolina was incorporated in 1844. At that time, it was the end of the rail line headed westward within the state of North Carolina. Wagons carried passengers from Marion across the Catawba River and up into the mountains, for those brave enough to go toward the setting sun and into wild, hilly, hunting lands populated by fierce and dangerous animals. River crossings were only possible when the water levels were low. Thirty-five miles west of Marion, Asheville, North Carolina would not really come into existence until the completion of the railroad in 1880. While Asheville would become a magnet drawing the wealthy, including George W. Vanderbilt, the erector of the largest private residence in America, to relaxation and therapy, Marion would become a mill town, growing much more slowly as blue collar workers planted homes and families around hard work and industry. Asheville was ten times larger in 1880 than Marion would be almost a hundred years later!

The true tenacity and courage of the town of Marion were proven in 1894 when the city was ravaged by a downtown fire that essentially gutted the mill town. All of Main Street was consumed by hot flames which had leapt rapidly from wooden structure to wooden structure, discouraged only slightly by the men and women, in the absence of an established fire department, forming bucket brigades in their attempt to save something of their home town. The determined people decided to rebuild their Marion.

The town had been named after Brigadier General Francis “Swamp Fox” Marion of Revolutionary War fame, who was in no sense one to give up in a fight! He had harried British soldiers using tactics he had learned from the Native American Indians in a form of warfare that would eventually be known as “guerilla” warfare. The fact that the “Swamp Fox” fought for the South Carolina militia and never had any real connection with North Carolina is indicative of the people’s spirit of unity against the common foe found in the English King and his dragoons. The people did not feel the need to name their town after a North Carolinian man as much as after a hard fighting American man. All the colonies had been in the struggle for freedom and independence together, and the heroes belonged to all the respective states formed. Marion, like her namesake, would find a way to fight through and past the setback of the 1894 fire. She would lift up a new downtown to replace the old. This reconstructed Marion, North Carolina is largely visible today in Marion’s historic downtown district which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Another fighting man who is both famous and from Marion, North Carolina, is Sergeant Daniel Kanipe. General George Armstrong Custer led the U. S. 7th Cavalry into one of the most famous battles in United States history, the Battle of Little Big Horn. Every single soldier under him was killed in the battle, except for two. Two men survived, but only because they were not there. The general had sent those men separately to carry messages to other military camps, perhaps looking for reinforcements. One of those men was Sergeant Daniel Kanipe of Marion, North Carolina.

Today, Marion, North Carolina, is still an industrious and growing town. Its climate is moderate with temperatures in the seventies and eighties during the hot months of summer, and only in the thirties and forties during the winter. Water sports are available at nearby Lake James as well as fishing, swimming, biking, hiking, and boating. Since Marion sits at the foot of Mount Mitchell, whose peak is the highest point above sea level east of the Mississippi, easy access to gorgeous waterfalls and mountain scenery is available on manageable hikes into deciduous forests which change into brightly colored landscape as the autumn leaves don their luminescence. More beautiful countryside does not exist anywhere in the world!

In town, an abundance of restaurants offer every conceivable culinary fare at reasonable prices. Steaks, BBQ, chicken, Asian, Italian, Mexican food and more are all available within the city limits. Multiple banking institutions are in Marion, NC, including the State Employees Credit Union, Wells Fargo, BB&T and others. Of the six original churches offering services since the beginning of the twentieth century, five are still serving their members and four make up part of the Historic District. Free public WI-FI is provided for the public in the downtown area, too.

Of course, if you decide to move into the area, you will enjoy one of my favorite features of this type of town. If you listen carefully from where you sit and read these words, you may hear it. If you cannot, then you may only realize how very valuable it is once you get to Marion. It is the quiet. The sounds of birds, breezes, church bells on Sunday, and occasional voices are all there is to muddle the simple silence of a peaceful Carolina day under the bright blue sky and the watchful green hills.
